The Shining, for the first time.
Believe it or not, I watched The Shining (Kubrick version) tonight, for the first time. I know those of you who know me will find this shocking, considering what a Kubric fanatic I am, but there is a reason why I’ve waited so long.
Many of the things in life that I am particularly fond of are of a limited run. For instance, my favorite writer is Hunter S. Thompson, who is no longer, shall we say, living. He saw to that personally a year ago February. Since Thompson will obviously not be coming out with any new work, I don’t want to exhaust his entire catalogue in a frenzied rush to read everything the man ever wrote. I want to savour it bit by bit, so that I may enjoy his writings for years to come without having to do a lot of rereading in order to get my HST fix.
It is for the same reason that I have not bothered to see all of Stanley Kubrick’s films. I am anxious to see them all, but it is for the very same reason that I am spacing out the remaining unseen works. Granted, I’ve seen most of them, considering he directed only thirteen films, but there are still a couple waiting for my virgin eyes.
So anyway, The Shining. Splendid. What more can I say? Not much, because it’s very late, and I need to sleep.
